Skin and Stress Don’t Go Together
March 31st, 2008Not only your head suffers from stress. Your skin is equally affected. Are you stressed out at work or in your home life? If your skin is red, prone to acne breakouts, or characterized by conditions like dry skin and rosacea, there is a chance that it is linked to the emotional stress you feel at work or at home.
Nobody enjoys stress. Ok, it can be helpful when you are trying to write the finishing paragraph in a presentation, or studying for an important exam. But it can be destructive when you are up all night anguishing over credit cards or the loss of a loved one. Anxiety directly alters the hormonal balances in your body. When these vital balances are thrown off, your skin shows it. Chronic stress changes the body’s biochemistry and is responsible for motivating an increase in sebum production, an enlargement of the sebaceous glands, acne spots, rosacea inflammation, and oily skin.
The bad news are about to get even worse. Not only emotional stress can damage your skin. Environmental contamination and poor air quality contribute to skin afflictions. We all know how mills pump tons of pollutants into the air just like cars do. But factors like animal hair, adhesives, mold, wind, and high levels of humidity can also affect pores. It seems like everything in the world is a stress-producer.
There are some things you can do to get closer to a stress-free existence and a healthier skin. Take a few minutes when you focus on relaxing and lessening the everyday stress. This can pay off in cleaner skin. Here is a quick recipe to what can be done:
* Relax. This is understandably easier said then done but it is crucial to take a deep breath every couple minutes and center yourself.
* Eat right. Eating a greasy cheeseburger won’t cause a breakout the next day but your overall diet does affect your skin. Eating lots of fruits and salads and drinking lots of water will keep skin healthy.
* Don’t smoke or drink too much. Smoking and drinking diminishes white blood cells and therefore immunity. When this happens, the body becomes more vulnerable to emotional and physiological triggers.
* Work out. The benefits of daily exercise and stress reduction are immense. Exercise also improves the health of skin by cleansing pores and improving oxygen levels in skin cells.
Natural Stress Relief
The correlation between stress and skin care is not a new concept. We are still struggling with finding ways to reduce anxiety and find an easy-reached calm within ourselves. When stress, both emotional and environmental, is constant, your body’s hormone levels can go up, adversely affecting the skin and how it works. Since stressed skin is flawed skin, what it needs most is to be soothed and replenished to regain its natural look and radiance.
